Remembering Betty White

By: Carrie Buchanan

17/1/2022

Today’s the day Betty White would have celebrated her 100th birthday.  And she had big plans for the day, including watching the movie about her life, with friends by her side.

Thanks to the power of social media, fans today are encouraged to remember Betty White and her love of animals by participating in the Betty White Challenge and make a $5 dollar donation to an animal shelter of your choice. You can also donate directly to the Betty White Wildlife Fund, which Betty founded in 2010 to help marine life.

Other ways to celebrate?  Someone suggested we wear all white today in her name and share pictures on social media.

You can take Betty’s L.A. Zoo Tour or visit the white rose memorial garden to leave a card.  In a statement, the zoo called Betty “one of it’s most ardent supporters and longtime friends.”  Betty’s L.A. Zoo tour honours her contributions with spots throughout the zoo where guests can learn about her connection to specific animals.

The Hallmark Channel will air “Honouring Betty White” today.  Programming includes a 40-episode marathon of “The Golden Girls” followed by an airing of “The Lost Valentine,” starring Betty White.

You can also watch when she hosted Saturday Night Live in 2010, since we can’t get to a theatre right now to see her special movie.  Oh, how I wish we had it playing here and we could go watch her life celebrated on the big screen. The movie was revamped to a tribute and is now called “Betty White: A Celebration” and is still planned for a one-night showing in select theatres today.  It includes her final public words to her fans.  It was her idea to shoot a video message to thank her fans.  So on December 20th, she got “glammed up” as she called it, and went on camera to share a cheerful message of thanks.  The video shot from her Brentwood, California home.

She made us laugh.  Right to the end.  She was so witty and funny and classy.  She had perfect timing when it came to telling a story or selling the joke.  Like so many things, I think I took it for granted.  I kinda thought, and hoped that she would always be with us.  Bringing us laughter and a love of life.

So today we celebrate the legend she was, however that looks.  Wearing white.  Watching episode after episode of The Golden Girls.  Or making a donation to an animal shelter.  If you want to give to the Sarnia Humane Society – click HERE.

Other places to give – Cat Chance – Catchanceetransfers@gmail.com

Heavens Wildlife Rescue –  and Caregivers of Petrolia Ferals

And if we can’t watch her movie, we can see her in action from her SNL appearance that her fans helped to make happen.

Thank you for the laughs Betty.  You will be missed.

Oh – by the way – Google has done something really cool in her honour.  Go to Google, type in Betty White, and see what happens.  Pretty sweet thing to do.
